Thanksgiving is less than two days away.  This holiday is squeezed between Halloween and Christmas and doesn't get the recognition it deserves.  This holiday has become so commercialized that it takes away from the meaning of the holiday.  Black Friday sales have taken over Thanksgiving.  It use to be that Black Friday was actually on Friday luring people away from their families after thanksgiving dinner so they can be first in line at their favorite store.  Well, Black Friday has become Black Thursday with sales happening DURING Thanksgiving dinner.
Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather, unite, and reconnect.
It's a time to teach the young with the stories retold and past down family traditions.  
More importantly, it's a time for heartfelt gratitude.  It's a time to reflect upon all the blessings infused into our life.  
Before you are immersed in the Thanksgiving festivities, I want to remind you to take some time now to write down what you are grateful for.  Yes, you can think about it, but it's best to write them down.  There are so many benefits to writing it down, from helping you to remember to reminding you on what to focus on.  For those of you who feel you have nothing to be grateful for, spend some extra time, and you will find it.  It doesn't have to be a grandiose thing.  Start small.  It could be a nail cutter so you don't scratch yourself or get an ingrown toenail – ew.  Just something, anything, so you can focus on all that you have instead of complaining about what you think you deserve.  Your brain can only process one thing at a time.  If it's busy being thankful, there is no room for complaining.
Being grateful is one of the best things you can do for you physical and emotional health.  Here are just some of the benefits:
It reduces toxic emotions such as envy, resentment, and regret.
It improves self-esteem and confidence.
It improves sleep.
It reduces aches and pains.
It reduces stress.
It helps foster relationships.

If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend starting a gratitude journal.  I recommend journaling daily first thing in the morning.  Check out the book The Artists Way by Julia Cameron to see the benefits of writing first thing in the morning:  http://amzn.to/2gGWzjr.  It's recommended to write 3 pages.  I don't always get the 3 pages and it's ok – 5 minutes is all you really need to reap the benefits.  Just write in the morning and get stuff out of your head.  You may be surprised at what comes out.  
Instead of writing out I am grateful for . . . , I ask myself the following question:  What am I grateful for this morning?  Our brains are wired that when you ask it a question, it seeks for answers.  Being grateful in the morning sets the positive tone for the day.  In the evening, journal and ask yourself What went well today? Spending 10-15 minutes writing down your thoughts and what you are grateful for right before bedtime not only helps calm down the racing mind but also helps improve your sleep.
Having an attitude of gratitude helps put you in a positive mindset.  It also helps create solutions.  Instead of complaining, your mind is looking for the best solutions to whatever comes at you.  More importantly, your gratitude is contagious.  People just feel good and are more apt to share that feeling that same feeling with others.

Today is Douglas Fir and White Fir!
